Now a return to the images that I am editing for my Photo Album about my travels to southern Utah. I mistakenly posted these slightly out of order, as yesterday I posted Image 24. Then today I discovered that I hadn't posted Image 23 yet... so here it is.
The day after our exploration of the eastern uplands of Zion National Park, my friends Rob and Brad and I returned to the House Rock Valley Road and the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. We had been in the area a couple of days prior when we explored Buckskin Gulch. This time we decided to hike into Wire Pass.
This is a narrow slot canyon that connects with Buckskin Gulch, then the Paria River, and eventually drains into the Colorado River. The vast majority of the time it is dry. But when there are heavy rains up in the Grand Staircase Escalante, the water rushes down through these canyons. As a result hikers are warned to be aware of flash floods.
I shot this image on a sheet of Fuji Neopan Acros 100. I rated the film at 64 iso and developed for 8:00 minutes in Rodinal developer, 1:50. The photograph was taken on October 17th 2013, at around 12:00 noon. I used my Ebony view camera and a wide 80mm lens. In an attempt to create some separation in the red sandstone, I added a #58 Green Filter. As light levels down in the slot canyon were rather low a lengthy exposure of 8 seconds at F18.0 was necessary.
