These are my old CCM Tacks skates that I bought over 20 years ago. I wore them for my first few seasons of Beer League hockey. Then I moved up and bought a much better pair of GRAF skates, and had them professionally fitted and adjusted. I have been wearing those for hockey ever since.
I kept the old CCM skates and use them for outside hockey. I just originally bought them to my shoe size, a 9-1/2. Later when I had the GRAF skates properly fitted, I understood that skates should fit a lot tighter than shoes, and the new ones are size 8.
The CCM's are looser fitting, which allows me to wear a heavier sock when I play outside. I keep them at the cottage most of the time, and use them to play at the outside rink in Nordegg. Last December I took them to the city and got them sharpened, in advance of the outdoor ice. But, then I broke my leg before the ice was ready, and haven't worn them since the sharpening.
On March 31st I dug the CCM skates out of the crawl space at the cottage. With the recovery from my broken leg well advanced, I thought these looser fitting skates might be better to start with. I'm concerned that skates, and particularly tight fitting ones, might put a lot of pressure on the six screws and metal plate that I now have in my leg, just above my ankle. I tried the skates on and they actually felt really good. I tightened them up and walked around the cottage for a bit, with the blade guards on, and there was no significant pain. So I will use these when I make my first attempts to start skating, later in April. In the mean time I need to continue with physio and some exercises to strengthen my leg and improve my balance.
