I no longer refer to these artworks as watercolors. As I outlined in a previous blog post I lay out the image in pencil, working from one of my photographs. Then I use watercolor paints to go in and provide areas of color. This generally mimics the colors and tones of the subject. But, the photographs that I work from are black and white, so I can only base my color selection on my recollection of the scene, and any phone snapshots that I might have. Obviously there is some artistic license on my part. Once I have added the color, I continue by sketching in the details of the image using a combination of graphite and ink.
For this most recent series I am working on a selection of images of old hotels from the Beer Parlour Project. This particular piece is based on the Fife Lake Hotel in south central Saskatchewan. I'm quite happy with the way this one turned out.
I will eventually be adding scans of these colorized sketches to the Beer Parlour Project website. But, I want to wait until I have at least four or five completed. This one is number three. So I need to complete one or two more before I take the next step.
So here are the final snapshots of this third sketch that I finished up on my birthday. I will move on to the next one shortly.
