On June 25th I went on yet another visit to the Nordegg Mine Site. I've now lost track of how many times I've been there. This is becoming a long term documentary project for me. and the County staff seem happy to oblige me. I will be displaying a small collection of my photographs at the visitor center later this summer. It seems to me that it is important to document the place before it deteriorates further.
It is certainly one of the best preserved and protected industrial sites that I have visited. All the more surprising given that it shut down in 1955.... so 70 years ago. I can only imagine how spectacular it must have been back in the day.
On this day I was part of a large tour group... at least 20 people... mostly elderly. I expect that by the upcoming long weekend, and going into the summer holidays, there will be a lot more younger people taking part. I sort of distanced myself from the tour and focused on taking a bunch of photographs. I went back to a number of areas that I had photographed in the past, and worked on improving my previous compositions, and doing a better job of exposure. In the past I had some critical errors with flare and focus. I visited one of the residences, the wash building and the brothel. Before I knew it the day was getting away from me and it was 6:00 by the time I finished up. But I came back to the cottage with over 20 sheets of exposed film. A good day of shooting...! In hindsight I wish I had brought the 8x10 along, but I didn't so this was just a day of 4x5 shooting. Maybe next time.
